About the Artist
Elizabeth McDevitt | Jeweler, Metalsmith
My career as an art jeweler began over forty years ago while serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Senegal, Africa. Intrigued by traditional African metalwork, I began a lifelong study of the history and technical aspects of jewelry making and design. After an apprenticeship with a goldsmith in Boston and graduate study in art history, I have combined my love of handwork with my interest in culture and historical style to create one of a kind pieces in precious metals. My journey has taken me to traditional jewelry masters in Africa, Egypt and India as well as contemporary masters from the United States, Europe, and Japan.
I make my all of my pieces by hand, using combinations of high karat gold, silver and platinum. I combine the techniques of engraving, chasing and repousse, and enameling, and I often use precious and semi-precious stones. My inspiration comes from a variety of sources: the shapes and colors of gemstones, organic forms such as flowers, leaves, shells, insects and birds, and from historical sources, myths and legend. In all of my work, I strive for perfection, a spiritual goal which is always just beyond the reach of the human hand.
